While Jim Thorpe – the gateway to the Poconos- is a beautiful place to visit any time of the year, it’s especially magical come winter.
With the mountains around the Lehigh Gorge draped with icy springs and tree branches flocked with snow, there’s no better place to enjoy a quick winter getaway. (We are only 90 minutes from Philadelphia and two hours from New York City.)
The Blue Mountain Ski Area is just a short drive from Jim Thorpe – a great place to relax after a day on the slopes. On milder winter weather days, Jim Thorpe’s mountains and trails minus foliage reveal the area’s natural landscape in a way you see no other time of the year. Don’t forget your camera!
Take a carriage ride (weather permitting) or stroll hand-in-hand down historic Race Street – the most romantic street in the Poconos, enjoy the historic district’s shops and galleries or a great show at the Mauch Chunk Opera House. And don’t forget there’s always free wine tasting at Big Creek Winery.
The Times House Bed and Breakfast is celebrating Valentine’s Day the entire month of February, offering complimentary wine, flowers and a heart-shaped box of chocolates with every two-night stay booked.
Valentine’s/Presidents weekend also falls during Jim Thorpe’s annual WinterFest celebration, complete with ice sculptures, woodcarving, Civil War Reenactors, and the famous Chamber of Commerce Mug Walk. Purchase a souvenir mug at the Visitor’s Center and participating merchants will fill it for you for free!
