If fast water is your thing, a dam release this weekend, should make for fantastic ride whitewater rafting or kayaking on the Lehigh River.
The Ancient Order of Hibernians will gather at the Old Jail on Saturday morning for a 10:30 a.m. Mass to commemorate the Day of the Rope, marking the 137th anniversary of the June 21, 1877 execution of Molly Maguires Alec Campbell, John “Yellow Jack” Donahue, Michael Doyle and Edward Kelly, who were hanged at the same time. Six other Molly Maguires were hanged that fateful day in Pottsville, while Thomas P. Fisher, James McDonnell and Charles Sharp were hanged in the Old Jail in 1878 and 1879.
If you’d like to get an idea of what life for coal miners was like, check out Eckley Miners’ Village this weekend for Patch Town Days. The annual event celebrates the ethnic backgrounds of the mining families who lived and worked in the anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania. Saturday there will be a car show, fashion show by Queen Victoria’s Court, and Victorian Tea in the Sharpe House. Saturday also includes a Yuengling Biergarten from noon to 7 p.m. and a special performance by the Mud Pond Boys from 4-7 p.m. Enjoy live music and ethnic food.
